There was a big stir in Madrigueira do Claro, a town inhabited by rabbits. A great gentleman would come to live there. Apparently, he was very rich and famous all over the world!
Finally, one spring morning, the new neighbor arrived in town. Everyone was amazed at his elegant attire and the distinction of his gestures. In fact, he was a great gentleman!
For a time they treated the newcomer like a king.
He let himself be adored, not talking more than necessary.
It was then that a catastrophe happened. The heavy rains had caused a flood that had damaged some burrows. A collection of donations was then organized among the inhabitants. Everyone contributed his contribution except the “great gentleman” who refused to donate a single penny.
The disappointment was enormous among the village's neighbors. From that day forward, the rich miser was treated with the utmost indifference. They left him in such isolation that he decided to leave.
He began to walk away, while neighbors were gathered in a nearby meadow to attend to community business. Then the gentleman noticed that he was coming out smoke from several dens. The city was on fire!
Quick as lightning, he intervened. He managed to put out the fire in half an hour. When they heard the news, the neighbors were very grateful. Moreover, when they heard the confessions of what they thought was a great gentleman, they granted him their pardon.
In fact, he was not rich. He had pretended to be a person of means to ensure everyone's friendship. The good deed he had done was what earned him a sincere friendship and the recognition of the residents of that city.
