In the 17th century, some collectors had their cabinets of curiosities. Considered great-grandparents of our modern museums, these spaces contained everything that the collector collected throughout his life, showing a little of the enormous diversity of the world. It could have everything: fossils, insects, old books, stuffed animals, paintings and much more. Today, we like to show our collections to everyone, but in the past these cabinets were only open to friends of collectors, scientists and researchers. So, imagine: that incredible collection of butterflies was there, tucked away, without any visits from school classes to brighten the day. Until some people realized that the collections deserved a special place, and so they gained space in the world's first museums – such as the British Museum and the Natural History Museum in London.
