Read the preface to the book The hidden face: a history of bullying and cyberbulling, by Maria Tereza Maldonado below:
Want to know what motivated me to write The Hidden Face? I've heard hundreds of stories of people who are bullied and cyberbullied, who practices it and who participates in these actions, supporting those who do and sharing offensive messages. I'll tell you something: I was bullied when I was ten. At that time, that name didn't even exist, and neither did the internet. The adults thought it was child's play and didn't realize the suffering it caused. Bullying is not a joke! Because fun is when everyone has fun! When some enjoy attacking, excluding, belittling others, this is a pattern of aggression that can extend to other relationships. From hundreds of true stories, The Hidden Face emerged. The characters synthesize many people I met with the characteristics of each one of them. Luciana is a teenager who loves to make friends. She is cheerful, outgoing, attractive, does well in her studies and is very self-assured. That description could be that of many other girls like her and it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary if were it not for a detail: in fact this is the description of a Luciana who only exists in the world virtual; in the real world she is introverted, has few friends, hates physical activity, eats compulsively, and hides her appearance with baggy, dark clothing. Only one thing the “two” Lucianas have in common: the passion for the computer. But an unattractive facet of the virtual world has come to torment the girl: she is being victimized by cyberbullying and feels that he cannot ask any adult for help as he fears being without his precious computer. I hope you enjoy reading The Hidden Face as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Maria Teresa Maldonado.
