My name is Chico. I'm a ship's cat. Modesty aside, I'm the smartest cat in Captain Pedro Álvares Cabral's fleet, who left Lisbon the other day with thirteen ships. The captain is also smart. Of the cats that were part of the expedition, he chose me as the flagship cat – I wanted to make sure that no rats gnawed at his maps and clothes. […] As a good Portuguese cat from 1500, I've traveled the seven seas, lived many adventures and dated cats from several continents.

Captain Cabral left saying he was going to the Indies, but halfway there he strayed off the route and we came to an island that was not on the maps. I think he already suspected the existence of this island. When the watchman shouted "Land in sight!" we were taking a nap in the cabin and I noticed that the captain was not at all surprised. He just stretched and said: “Come on, oh Chico”. I also stretched. We went down to the deck and took the boats to the island.
We were greeted by many naked and red-painted men. They were armed with bows and arrows and looked brave, but they were good and cheerful. When one of us shook a little bell or a rattle, they roared with laughter. A little mirror or a colored cloth was, for them, something from another world. And, apparently, they found our way of speaking very funny. […]
