Dolphins are capable of generating sounds, which help them locate themselves. That's because these sounds are directed, through a structure that has the curious name of melon and which is in the dolphin's head, towards a certain object. Upon reaching it, these sounds are reflected and return to the dolphin's head in the form of echoes. They enter through the jaw and are transmitted to the brain. Thus, the dolphin can know where the object is, what it looks like, how big it is, etc.
