Salar de Uyuni is part of the Bolivian Altiplano, a region that is about four thousand meters high and was formed during the lifting of the Andes Mountains. In the past, approximately 40 thousand years ago, there was an immense prehistoric lake on the site, called Lake Michin, which after a long period of transformation and drying gave rise to the salar.
In the middle of the salar, we find some islands, which are the tips of ancient volcanoes that were submerged in the prehistoric era. The largest of these is Incahuasi Island, a word that means “house of the king” in the Quetchua language, spoken by the Bolivian Indians. There, there are giant cacti that can reach 10 meters in height. As these cacti grow about an inch a year, that means some of them _________ over a thousand years!
