Considered one of the most important writers of Brazilian Literature, Mário de Andrade was novelist, chronicler, poet, critic of literature and art, musicologist, photographer, ethnographer and folklorist. And he did it all very well.
Born in the city of São Paulo on October 9, 1893, Mário Raul de Morais Andrade was described as a good student, but nothing exceptional. On the other hand, in the subjects of his interest – literature and music – he excelled.
He had everything to become a brilliant pianist, like his brother Renato, but tragedy befell the family. At the age of 14, Renato died as a result of a blow during a football match. The traumatic loss left Mário with a tremor in his hands that prevented him from continuing to play the piano.
In life, there are years when everything seems to happen. For Mário, 1917 was certainly one of those years. That's when he graduated from the Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, published his first book of poetry under the pseudonym Mário Sobral and lost his father. It was also the year in which he met Anita Malfatti, a painter full of innovative ideas, who had just held a controversial solo exhibition. And the writer Oswald de Andrade, who approached him after attending a conference by Mário.
Those young people began to think together about a new way of doing art and culture in Brazil. They wanted to break with the rigidity of artistic expressions produced in the country until then. At the same time, they wanted their works to convey Brazilianness like never before. It was the beginning of the Grupo dos Cinco – and of Brazilian modernism.
Then came 1922, another year like that in the life of Mário de Andrade. It was the year in which, together with Grupo dos Cinco, he organized and was one of the stars of the São Paulo Modern Art Week; launched the book of poetry “Pauliceia Desvairada”, a landmark of the modernist movement in Brazil; he became professor of History of Music and Aesthetics at the Conservatory where he studied.
It is said that his masterpiece – Macunaíma –, published in 1928, was written in less than a week, while the author spent the holidays at the family’s farm […]
Mário de Andrade continued his life like this – curious, tireless, brilliant – until he died of a heart attack, on February 25, 1945.
