For some people, bats are frightening beings because they remind you of vampires… Are you part of this gang? So, it's time to review your ideas because bats are very interesting animals! For starters, they are the only mammals capable of flight. In addition, they help keep forests alive and healthy.
I knew only three – I said three: 1, 2 and 3! – among the more than a thousand known species, they feed on the blood of birds or other mammals, and evidently they do not do so out of harm, but because their organism needs this food. The other bats have a varied menu, which includes insects, amphibians, smaller mammals and even other bats. There are also those who eat fruits and those who feed on the nectar of flowers. It is precisely these, fruit bats and nectarivores, that play a very important role for the flora.
In the case of frugivores, their organism takes advantage of the nutrients from the ingested fruits and releases, with the feces, the seeds, which fall on the forest floor and give rise to a plant. On the other hand, nectarivorous bats carry out the well-known pollination. While feeding on the nectar of a certain flower, pollen grains (which are the male gametes of plants) stick to your body and, when they land on other flowers, these grains fall, allowing fertilization between they.
By spreading seeds and pollen, bats favor the birth of plants and ensure the good health of the forest. Are you now able to see these little winged gardeners in another way?
