[…] The Museum of Arts and Crafts (MAO) is a cultural space that houses and disseminates a representative collection of the universe of work, arts and crafts in Brazil.
An initiative of the Flávio Gutierrez Cultural Institute – ICFG, the MAO preserves objects, instruments and work utensils from the Brazilian pre-industrial period. The museum is located at Belo Horizonte's Central Station, where thousands of people pass by who live directly with its art and its history. Opened in 2005, it is the first and only museum in Latin America dedicated entirely to the theme. With an area of 9,000 m2, it occupies the historic buildings of Praça da Estação.
The collection is made up of tools, utensils, machines and various equipment that, individually or together, lead each visitor to an identification with the universe of work. An interesting observation is to identify in each piece the importance of work in every person's life and how man uses his creative ability and expresses himself with art and sensitivity.
A fascinating journey through time. There are more than two thousand pieces from the 18th to the 20th centuries — a donation to the public patrimony by the collector and cultural entrepreneur Angela Gutierrez —, with objects used at the beginning of the most varied professions, where you can understand all the wealth and evolution of work from the pre-industrial period in Parents. It is impossible for each of us not to identify with the exhibition.
Among the main thematic areas are the crafts of wood, ceramics, stoning and goldsmithing, commerce, mining, leather, earth, etc. Among the professions are barber, carpenter, salesman, cook, dentist, tinsmith, miner, goldsmith, cheese maker and weaver.
The implementation of the Museum of Arts and Crafts also included the restoration, by the Municipality of Belo Horizonte, of Praça da Estação, the city's inaugural landmark, which is increasingly consolidated as a space for events and demonstrations cultural.
