The butterflies

There are 17,000 species of butterfly. It is estimated that the first butterflies appeared between 60 and 70 million years ago.

The largest butterfly in the world is the female birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae), found in Papua New Guinea. It measures 32 centimeters from wing to wing. The smallest is the Pygmy Blue of the West (Brephidium exilis), which measures 1.5 centimeters from wing to wing.

The colors of the butterfly's wings serve to regulate its body temperature. The wings have scales that, depending on the color, reflect and absorb the sun's rays differently, protecting the butterfly from heat or warming it.
