German chemist, pharmacologist and bacteriologist Gustav Giemsa is best known for his development of Giemsa stain, used in the histopathological diagnosis of malaria and others parasitic diseases. His method is still used in laboratories.
He worked with Bernhardt Nocht at the Hamburg Institute of Tropical Medicine, becoming in 1900 head of the Department of Chemistry. In 1908, he spent six months in Manguinhos. He returned to Brazil in 1935, together with Ernst Nauck, to study the acclimatization of populations of German origin from Espírito Santo in the tropics.
