Calendar

The word calendar came from the Greek kalein, which means to call out, to summon. In Latin, it became calendae, meaning the first day of the month. It's from calendae that our word calendar appeared, which acquired the generic sense of marking time (months and days of the year).

Calendars it was the first day of the month among the Romans. This term probably came from the Roman custom of calling or summoning the people on the first day of each month, when the pontiff reported on the festivals and holy days that were to be observed. It was not until much later that the official calendar of Rome was posted in public places where everyone could see it.
