But what are fava beans anyway? They are the fruits of legumes, the same botanical family as beans, soybeans and peanuts. Thus, the plant that produces fava beans is called a faveiro, like the faveiro-de-wilson. The fruits of this species are intensively collected because they produce a medicinal substance called rutin, used to treat circulatory problems. But believe me, this same substance is toxic to cattle – that's why ranchers eliminate Wilson's faveiro from natural pastures in areas of the Cerrado where they live. For these reasons, the species was already considered rare when it was discovered, and today there are few adult individuals left. In an attempt to conserve the plant, the Belo Horizonte Zoo-Botanical Foundation develops a special study program on Wilson's faveiro.
