This two-hundred-year-old tradition is a game that mixes indigenous legends, dance and music, as well as a neat and shiny outfit. During the June season, hundreds of groups reign in the fairs throughout Maranhão, but it is in capital, São Luís, that the party takes the shape of a true spectacle, being among the most popular of the Brazil.
There are more than a hundred battalions of bumba meu boi that go out through the streets of the city, in the largest folklore event in Maranhão. It is quite different from other regions of the country, where the triangle and accordion dominate the beat of the parties.
