“Bird of Prey” is a production by the Cornell Ornithology Laboratory that features one of the most endangered birds on the planet: the Philippine eagle (
Pithecophaga jefferyi). This bird of prey is endemic to four islands in the Republic of the Philippines (i.e. it can only be found in these islands and nowhere else) and its population has declined greatly in recent decades because of deforestation and hunting. The documentary showcases the important conservation and environmental education work carried out by the Philippine Eagle Foundation. He also publishes very rare records of the day-to-day life of a young Philippine eagle being cared for by its parents in the wild. The nest is dozens of meters high and there are many scenes showing the challenge this posed for the cameramen.
The team leader is American Neil Retting, who had already participated in an expedition to register the Philippine eagle more than 30 years ago, when there was very little information about the species. At age 64, Neil returned to the Philippines to make new records and show the efforts that have been made to ensure the bird's survival.
“Bird of Prey” is available on select streaming platforms. streaming and sales will go to Philippine eagle conservation projects. Unfortunately, the documentary is in English and there is no Portuguese subtitles available, at least so far.
