Winter aggravates bamboo shortages caused by last year's May earthquake
The earthquake that killed 70,000 people in May last year in Sichuan Province, in southwestern China, also moved the world because of the plight of pandas. Sichuan is the region where most of these bears live, in reserves and research centers. […]
Nearly a year later, bamboo shortages are considered the biggest threat to pandas' survival. In winter, pandas continue to feed on this plant. "The destructive impact of the earthquake will be greater than in 1983," said Zhang Hemin, director of the Wolong Giant Panda Research and Conservation Center. Zhang refers to a 40% death toll of the panda population that year due to a plague that ravaged bamboo forests.
