The Amazon has the greatest diversity of freshwater fish in the world. These animals, however, are threatened by fishing without control and planning. Both food and ornamental fish are caught in large numbers. But the species do not reproduce at the same speed and quantity with which they are caught. Result: may disappear.
With animals that are usually hunted, something similar occurs. Hunting has been an illegal activity in Brazil since 1967. However, a large portion of the population hunts regularly. Not just for taste, but because that's a way to get food. However, when you start to sell meat obtained from hunting, the real problems begin. The amount of consumers becomes enormous and, to meet it, it is necessary to remove an increasing number of animals from nature. But many species do not reproduce at rates compatible with withdrawal rates. Then, they are threatened, because their number is decreasing more and more.
Another problem that affects many species of animals, both aquatic and terrestrial, is the fact that they are considered dangerous. This is what happens with alligators, for example. People see these animals, without any real and proven justification, as a threat to their lives or that of their family members, and so they decide to kill them. Attitudes like this, however, can generate serious problems, such as what happened with the giant otters, slaughtered between 1950 and 1960 to almost extinction due to the high value of their skins.
You now have an idea of how many threats surround the Amazon, an extremely rich and diverse region, a paradise for biologists and other specialists in the environment. However, it is not enough to protect the great diversity of plants and animals or keep them untouched. The Amazon must be used properly, planned and responsibly. It needs to be conserved for the good of the people who live there and for the good of the country, the continent and even the planet.
