On your next trip to the beach, beware! If you see a small white disk with a star-shaped design in the sand, you are probably looking at a shellfish skeleton. É! There are about 150 species of these animals on the planet. It shouldn't be hard to find one…
Sea biscuits, despite having a very different body, are related to sea urchins. Hedgehogs are spherical and display long spines. Sea biscuits, on the other hand, have very short spines and, according to their name, they have a very flat body, like a disc, a biscuit or a… biscuit!
When it comes to feeding, sea crackers have a special aid: thousands of feet spread through their body they select grains of sand and, with the help of the thorns, they carry the grains to the mouth of the animal. Easy! Have more.
Inside the mouth, five powerful teeth grind the grains of sand before they are swallowed. But whoever thinks that sea biscuits feed on sand is wrong. She is even interested in algae and other small organisms that live among the grains. They are so tiny that it is impossible to see them with the naked eye, but they do not escape becoming food for sea crackers.
