Portuguese activity, aimed at students in the ninth year of elementary school, addresses the simple period. When does a period qualify this way? When you only have one prayer! Let's analyze the simple periods that make up the text about the origin of the word “forró”? For this, answer the various questions proposed!

For all or forrobodó

Since the origin of the name, there is more than one narrative about the word forró. According to conductor Marcos Farias, composer and instrumentalist Sivuca (1930-2006) defended the thesis that the word has as its origin the expression in English “for all”.

The term would have been coined in the 19th century because of the presence of English workers in the installation of railways and weaving factories in the Northeast. “More cotton was produced in Campina Grande than in Liverpool”, Sivuca used to explain, according to the conductor.

The English version of the word forró was updated in the 20th century. Some say that the term would have emerged in World War II in Natal. The capital of Rio Grande Norte received 10,000 US soldiers at the time of the conflict. This version is illustrated in the movie For All – The Trampoline of Victory (1997), by Buza Ferraz and Luiz Carlos Lacerda.

The ethnomusicologist Carlos Sandroni, professor at the Department of Music at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) and responsible for research at IPHAN, discards this version. According to him, since the 19th century, the word forró has been used “to designate a popular party with dance, music and drink”.

The specialist also recalls that “the 1912 dictionary edition has the word forrobodó. In the following year's edition, it already has forrobodó and forró. Apparently, forró is an abbreviation of forrobodó”. According to philologist Evanildo Bechara, forrobodó comes from the Galician word forbodó.

In addition to philology, geography and music history would discard the formation of the word forró from the English expression “for all”. Sandroni's hypothesis is that forró is born far from the coast of Natal. The original matrices were located in the interior of the Northeast in an area that is now considered the hinterland of Pernambuco Paraíba and Ceará.
