Originally, the piano's black keys were made from a dark and very resistant wood, ebony. The white ones were ivory, taken from the claws of elephants. Today, although pianos are made from synthetic materials, the appearance of the original raw materials has been maintained. The instrument has its current form, thanks to the Italian Bartolomeu Crisofori, who in 1709 named it “pianoforte”. The name was a reference to the type of sound it produced: in Italian, “piano” means “soft”, and “forte” means “loud”. The word “pianoforte” was very long and, over time, evolved into the current, shorter form.
