Frogs live near bodies of water – such as rivers, lakes, ponds or puddles – because they need moisture to protect their skin. During their life cycle, they occupy both the aquatic environment – in the egg and tadpole stage – as well as the terrestrial environment, when they are already adults. In the aquatic phase, tadpoles breathe through their gills, like fish, and also through their skin; they feed on small algae, on the remains of vegetables that float in the water and cling to the slime – which they scrape off the pebble inside the pond. Only after their metamorphosis are frogs ready to occupy the terrestrial environment, when they pass - breathing through their lungs and also through their skin. In adulthood, frogs become insectivores, feeding on invertebrates such as ants, flies, cockroaches and beetles.
