The different appearances of the Moon are called phases. They happen because the Moon revolves around the Earth and, along this path, we see its part illuminated from different positions. The Moon, like the Earth, is always receiving light from the Sun on a part of its surface. When the illuminated part is all facing the Earth, we have the Full Moon, and when the illuminated part is completely opposite the Earth, we have the New Moon, the one in which it does not appear.
