Why, when we descend the mountain, do our ears slap?

Inside the ear we have a very thin membrane called the eardrum. When we descend a mountain range, it is pushed to the bottom due to the increased pressure of the atmosphere at the lowest points on Earth. This sensation soon disappears because at the back of the ear there is also a channel that communicates with the pharynx and nose. Air enters through it and pushes the eardrum in the opposite direction, helping to balance the pressure. To alleviate discomfort, it's a good idea to chew or swallow something, as these movements help draw air into this channel.

“Recreio” magazine, year 6, n. 274, p.5.
