Read:
"Cururu frog,
by the river
when the frog sings, little sister
is that you are cold.”
(popular song)
The cane toad (Bufo marinus) – also known as bullfrog – is the most common amphibian in Brazil. It is even present in popular culture. An old song says that he sings by the river. But the song of toads and frogs has a name of its own – it's called croaking. Have you ever tried to imitate the sound of these animals and croak?
Native to the Americas, the Bufo marinus it was introduced in other places such as Australia and Cuba. The objective was to control natural pests – mainly in sugarcane plantations. But, ironically, today it is also considered a pest, due to its venom. Local predators and some domestic animals try to eat the bullfrog and end up dying from its toxic fur.
The cane is highly poisonous. The venom is produced by glands on its back and by two large pouches behind its eyes. Unlike venomous animals, frogs cannot inject venom. But if it is swallowed by a predator, it may spit it out because of the toxic taste of its prey. If you don't spit out the frog, the predator may even die.
