The object's area was equivalent to twice the territory of California
Almost planet. On March 29, 1807, German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers discovered a giant asteroid while looking for a new planet between Mars and Jupiter. The celestial body was christened Vesta, after the goddess of sacred fire. The object's area was equivalent to twice the territory of California in the United States.
Before this discovery, in 1779, Olbers developed a new method of calculating the orbits of comets. He also discovered the asteroid Pallas and five comets during his investigations in Bremen, Germany.
More than two centuries after Vesta was discovered, NASA embarked on a mission with the Dawn spacecraft from July 16, 2011 to September 5, 2012, to gather information about the asteroid for the first time.
According to studies carried out during the mission, Vesta formed 1 to 2 million years after the birth of the Solar System. The probe took images from a distance of about 5,000 kilometers from the surface of the asteroid. Vesta is believed to have had a deep impact and about 6% of all meteorites found on Planet Earth come from what happened to Vesta.
With an almost spherical shape, it is almost considered a dwarf planet. In scientific articles published in 2012, the asteroid was called a protoplanet, that is, it was only in the initial phase of a planet's development.
