A transport available to the entire community began operating in Paris, France, on March 18, 1662. This would have been the world's first collective bus service. The innovation did not last long and ended in less than ten years, returning to the region regularly more than 200 years later.
The idea came from mathematician, physicist and philosopher Blase Pascal, who invested almost all of his fortune in the project. After obtaining authorization from the local government, to start the services, seven horse-drawn carriages called Carosses to Cinq Sous. Each of them had capacity for eight passengers. Then came the opportunity to ride a car without having to pay for horses and the entire cost of a vehicle.
The euphoria of the population was such that there was no place for everyone. Merchants began to request roads in front of their establishments to take advantage of the flow of passengers. There was a forecast of opening five new routes, but only one got off the ground.
Despite looking like a success, urban public transport has not prospered as investors had hoped. It is believed that most people saw it as fun and, soon, public transport lost its fun.
The quality of the service provided may also have been one of the obstacles to moving forward. There were few cars for a great demand.
Here, in Brazil, the first collective bus began to circulate in 1817, in Rio de Janeiro. During the reign of Dom João VI, the sergeant-major of the Royal Guard, Sebastião Fábregas de Suriguê, won the right to operate two passenger transport lines.
