Japan: Student falls ill after school bans sweatpants in winter

Wearing a sweatshirt on a snowy day is a comfortable and safe option to stay warm, especially if the temperatures are very low, but it seems that this is not always possible!

In another case recently, a female student attending a school in Japan missed a week of school. The reason is bizarre: the dress code does not allow girls to wear tights under their skirts to keep their legs warm in winter.

Student gets sick for not going against dress code

On January 25, the population of the city of Hiroshima woke up to a heavy snowfall. That became the coldest day of the winter so far. The forecast indicated a high of just 3.1 degrees Celsius at midday and a low of -4.2 degrees Celsius. Before going to class at a public school, a boy who is a second year student decided to wear a sweatshirt over his uniform shirt to make the course warmer.

When approaching the school's entrance gate, the student was stopped by a teacher, who told him that he would have to take off his sweatshirt, as it is not allowed by the school's regulations. The boy respected the order, attending classes without wearing the garment and also no longer wearing it when leaving school to return home.

The following night, he developed a fever, which required him to stay home until 1 February in recovery.

The child's parents are very upset about the situation and request that the school review its dress code. The school says it believes its current policies allow students to dress in warm clothing as long as possible. enough to deal with the cold, except in the face of any pre-existing medical conditions or other situations specials.

The dress code explicitly states that students may wear sweaters, gloves and scarves on extreme cold days. Coats and sweatshirts, in turn, are not on the list of permitted clothing, so the problem – in the eyes of the teacher – seems to have been more the fact that the boy is wearing a sweatshirt instead of a sweater, which is an additional warm garment and free of any kind of violation.
