The jaguar is a big cat belonging to the Felidae family. belongs to the genus panthera, same genus as lions, leopards, tigers and snow leopards.
It has a golden yellow coloration and spots on the heads, paws and neck. On the rest of the body, it has rosettes with spots on the inside (one of the characteristics that distinguish it from leopards), giving it a high degree of camouflage when it is inside the forest. The pattern of spots is unique for each animal, that is, each jaguar has a different mesh of rosettes, functioning as a kind of “fingerprint”. This helps us to identify each individual and better study them.
They are large and muscular animals, their weight and size can vary according to the environment. On average, they weigh between 65 and 100 kg, but males weighing more than 148 kg have already been recorded in the Pantanal. Pantanal jaguars are larger and more robust than jaguars from other biomes, probably due to the greater availability of prey in the biome and the more open vegetation. In biomes such as the Atlantic Forest and Amazon, individuals are smaller and more slender, allowing them to move more easily through the dense forest.
Its length, from the snout to the tip of the tail, can reach 2.5 meters and 85 cm at the withers (height from the front paw to the shoulder blade).
As in other cats of the genus panthera (lion, leopard, tiger and snow leopard), the jaguar's hyoid bone, located in the region of throat, is not completely ossified, allowing this group of animals to emit lower sounds. The most famous of these is the lion's roar, which can be heard over 5 km away. In jaguars, this sound is known as snorting.
