Carnivorous plants remove essential substances for their survival from devoured animals, especially nitrogen. Without it, a plant cannot make the chlorophyll needed to transform light into chemical energy – a process known as photosynthesis. Without nitrogen, these plants would also not be able to grow and multiply, as DNA and proteins are also rich in nitrogen.
Carnivorous plants are free from dependence on soils rich in nitrates, which are compounds generally absorbed by plants. Thus, they thrive where other plants cannot, such as in the savannah, deserts, salt marshes and other habitats with nutrient-poor soils. But, on the other hand, they come to depend on the nitrogen contained in animal proteins.
