Cats are not afraid of water. They just don't like to shower! To do a good cleaning, it is necessary to handle them carefully, as the pussies are sensitive and are insecure in strange situations. Also, the scent of shampoos is a nuisance to their sense of smell.
And have you noticed how they lick each other a lot? One of the reasons for this is to clean up. The tongue of cats is rough and has hook-shaped protrusions on the surface that work like a comb. When passing it on the fur, the animal removes the dirt, maintaining the softness. The behavior also makes the fur impermeable (prevents the entry of water), which makes the multiplication of parasites difficult.
