A lot of people confuse, but each of the birds has its peculiarities
They belong to the same family, have vibrantly colored feathers and attract everyone's attention, especially children. The similarities between parrots and parrots are many, but they are not so alike. The two birds are of different species, and each has its particularities. “As they are from the same family, it is normal for people to distinguish between parrots, parrots and parakeets by the size, but this is just one of the characteristics to be evaluated”, explains veterinarian Geraldo Sávio, from Dog City.
Parrots are sociable, communicative and intelligent, which makes them very popular with pet birds. According to Geraldo, they measure from 34cm to 40cm and weigh between 300g and 800g, being much larger than parrots. In addition to the robust and compact body, the nails are very sharp, and the tail and wing feathers are short. The predominant color is green, and the beak is round, curved and normally dark. They are very resistant: they can live from 50 to 80 years.
The most striking feature is the ability to repeat words. “The parrot does not have a vocal cord, but it has a membrane called a syrinx, which allows the reproduction of various sounds. They are excellent imitators, but they do not know the meaning of what they say.”
Parrots range between 24cm and 30cm and weigh between 80g and 200g. The predominant color is also green, and some have a red or blue base of wings. According to Geraldo, they live an average of 20 to 30 years in captivity. In nature, they live less because they face more intense weather conditions. Divided into several species, they are also in the parakeet family. They do not imitate like the parrot, but make a very loud sound, which can be recognized from afar. They live in flocks and make a lot of noise, especially when they are flying.
Both are wild birds and can no longer be domesticated, only if acquired in captivity legalized by IBAMA. “Older generations were used to taking these birds out of the wild and making them pets. With the urbanization and extinction of some species, this custom was revised and several laws were created to protect the Brazilian fauna and flora. Today, it is a crime to breed birds taken from nature without criteria and prior authorization from government agencies”, he warns.
