Physician, José Gomes de Faria stood out for the discovery of the worm Ancylostoma. brasiliensis, a parasite of dogs and cats that causes, in humans, serpiginous dermatitis, also known as geographic bug or cutaneous larva migrans.
Gomes de Faria started in Manguinhos as a student. In 1912, he participated in a scientific expedition to Ceará and Piauí, sponsored by the Inspectorate of Works against Droughts. As a helmintologist, he described new species of trematodes. He also developed research in bacteriology and marine biology and dedicated himself to the field of industrial fermentations.
