On April 9, 1959, NASA announced the names of its first class of astronauts to the press and the public. Seven men were rigorously chosen from more than a hundred test pilots to participate in Project Mercury, whose objective was to carry out the first manned flights in the United States. All those elected were married and claimed to have the full support of their wives to participate in the mission. One of them was John Glenn who, in 1962, was the first American to make a manned flight, in the Friendship 7 mission. Aboard the Mercury MA-G capsule, he made three laps around Earth's orbit in 4 hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds. In 1998, Glenn also became the oldest man to travel in space, at age 77.
