Like so many other plants, jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) arrived in Brazil by Portuguese hands. Originally from India, jackfruit played an important role in the reforestation of the Tijuca Forest. Because of the lack of water, no other trees could grow. But the tough jackfruit tree did it, and it flourished.
There are hard and soft jackfruit. The hard fruits are mostly used to make jams and candies. Because it is sweeter and softer, soft jackfruit is better to eat. The seeds of both varieties can also be consumed, after roasting or cooking.
