Located in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, the city is part of two circuits: Estrada Real and Nascentes do Rio Doce. It received this name because it was, in the 18th century, the highest municipality located in the springs area. It is 195 km away from Belo Horizonte.
In addition to the natural beauties, with several waterfalls, the city has great rural tourism potential, enriched with beautiful bicentennial farms. Alto Rio Doce maintains the tradition of the people of Minas Gerais to celebrate.
Its street carnival attracts thousands of tourists every year. Another important tourist event is the Agricultural Exhibition, held annually in July.
