First of all, it's important to know that salt and sugar are foods that dissolve in water. Therefore, they receive the name of solute. When we eat, nutrients contained in the food are absorbed through the intestinal wall, falling into the bloodstream. These nutrients become dissolved solute in our blood.
If we eat something very salty like popcorn, or sweet, like chocolate, there is an imbalance in our body: our blood starts to present a large amount of solute, becoming more concentrated than the rest of the body. And then, it is to solve this problem of difference in concentration, that our brain “warns us” that we are thirsty.
