Petra is a historic and archaeological city located in southern Jordan. The city is famous for its rock-carved architecture and water pipe system. Another name for Petra is Pink City, due to the color of the stones there.
The architectural style of the Nabateans, of Greco-Roman and Oriental influence, reveals their active and cosmopolitan nature. These people believed that Petra was under the protection of the god dhu Shara.
The archaeological site remained unknown to the western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as “a pink and red city as old as time” in a poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage".
