NAME:

Read:

a wild mosquito

Native to Southeast Asia, the Aedes albopictus is a wild mosquito, which has adapted to urban, suburban and rural environments. It is found more frequently in places with lower human concentration and greater vegetation cover.

Although it uses artificial deposits, such as ae. aegypti, lays its eggs especially in natural breeding sites, such as bromeliads and fruit peels to tree holes, located around the houses up to long distances in secondary forests.

In recent decades, the Hey albopictus spread in Africa, Europe and the Americas, mainly due to the international trade in used tires. Deposited inside the tires, the eggs are resistant to desiccation and remain viable for several months in the absence of water.

Although it is native to tropical and subtropical regions, it has successfully adapted to cooler areas. Eggs from temperate zone strains are more tolerant of cold, even withstanding snow and sub-zero temperatures. The European variant of Hey albopictus undergoes a period of diapause (reduced development) during the winter months.

In Brazil, it was first detected in the 1980s, in the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Gradually, it invaded neighboring states, such as Espírito Santo and São Paulo.

Available in:. (With adaptations).
