Located in the Vale do Rio Doce region, 271 km from the capital of Minas Gerais, Matias Barbosa has great relevance in the national historical scenario for integrating the cities that were part of the New Way.
The city houses a great historical collection, such as the Chapel of the Rosary, listed by IPHAN. Reminiscent of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Caminho Novo farm, the chapel hosted some miners in confidence in mid-1789. The famous Old Mansion dates back to 1850 and currently houses a beautiful antique shop.
Among the other charms of the city, the Labyrinth of the Tunnels stands out, the biggest tourist attraction in the city. To this day, its purpose is not known for sure, only that it was built at the same time as the church.
