The Indians lived in villages, practicing agriculture, hunting, fishing and gathering. These villages could change places after a few years as communities needed to move in search of more suitable locations for the carrying out activities that guarantee their survival, areas of richer soil or regions with greater abundance of game, fish or fruit according to the seasons. Thus, indigenous populations had great mobility and few goods, which had to be transported from one place to another.


The Tupi-Guarani basically cultivated cassava, but they could also plant corn, beans, sweet potatoes. Some grew yam, pineapple, pumpkin, as well as cotton and tobacco. They consumed practically everything they produced and never built up large inventories. […]
The Indian only had personal ownership of his weapons and ornaments and shared everything else, mainly the products of hunting, fishing and gathering. […]
The division of tasks in indigenous society determined that, in addition to hunting, fishing, cutting firewood and fighting, men would build canoes and huts and clear the land for planting crops. The women planted, harvested, prepared food, spun, weaved, made baskets and clay pots and collected fruits, roots and edible insects, took care of the house and the children. […]
