To support its 105 centimeters in length and up to two meters in wingspan, the harpy eagle – the largest eagle in the Americas and one of the largest in the world – has a varied diet: sloths, monkeys, crabs, skunks, armadillos, deer, coatis, some species of birds and reptiles.
The capture of prey over six kilograms is successful thanks to the well-developed claws and tarsi: one of the nails measures up to seven centimeters. “The harpy hunts by lurking: in an inn, it stays discreetly looking for its prey for a long time. When it locates the animal, it flies between the treetops and captures it”, highlights ornithologist Willian Menq.
