How does water produce electricity?

To understand the process, you need to know the difference between potential and kinetic energies. Potential is the ability of the static object to move (energy without movement), while kinetic is the displacement itself (energy of movement). In a dam, standing water accumulates potential energy. When the floodgates are opened, the potential energy turns into kinetic energy and drives the turbines. Electric energy is produced by a generator that works with the movement of turbines.
