NAME:

Read:

Meet the chick, a relative of the clay joey

To identify the species, a tip is to observe the vocalization; bird has more colorful plumage than the 'architect cousin'.

Plumage colors, beak size and bird behaviors are important characteristics for observers and experts to identify the species. In this case, the tip is to pay attention to the vocalization to discover the popular name of the

Phleocryptes melanops, a bird that occurs from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul.

Small, measuring up to 13 centimeters and 16 grams, the beak calls attention for the sound it reproduces when it is perched in the typical vegetation of swamps, taboais, pirizais and swamps.

In addition to the sound, the plumage stands out for the mix of colors. Distantly related to the clay john, it also has brownish tones, but its color is more striking: head dark brown, white eyebrow, throat, chest and abdomen yellowish and back striped with shades of gray, black and brown.

Male and female are identical. The juveniles, on the other hand, have more opaque colors, grayish upper parts with white patches and a striated chest.

The chit-chat menu features insects caught near the water. During the reproductive period, the bird builds nests on the stalks of cattails (Thypha domingensis) – aquatic plant, which can measure about 3 meters in height; with the help of leaves and mud. The bird uses the Brazilian coast as a breeding ground.

Outside Brazil, it also occurs in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Bolivia.
