With a solitary and friendly habit, the maned wolf usually lives even close to large cities. The species is considered “Vulnerable” on the list of Brazilian animals threatened with extinction and has been considered “Near Threatened” worldwide since 1996. Change in natural environments is the main threat.
The species reproduces once a year, between 3 and 7 years of age. At the end of the rainy season, the couple spends 15 to 20 days together for mating.
Despite being found in parts of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia and Peru, 80% of the population lives in Brazil. Considered one of the symbols of the Cerrado, it does not need closed forests and likes open habitats, such as countryside areas.
