Do you know the lesser anteater?

The species is also known as the vest anteater; found throughout Brazil, mammal feeds on insects and honey.

Brazil is home to three species of anteaters, anteaters, giant anteaters and lesser anteaters (tetradactyla anteater). The latter, despite being considered medium-sized, draws attention due to its body dimensions: the tail measures from 40 to 68 centimeters and the tongue can reach 40 centimeters in length.

With up to seven kilos and a size that varies from 44 to 77 centimeters, the mammal has a yellowish coat with two black stripes that appear to form a “vest”. The front paws have sharp hooked claws.

The long tongue is not a "charm", but an important tool for capturing ants, termites and bees, as well as honey, items in the animal's diet. As it has no teeth, the lesser anteater swallows its prey, which is crushed and digested in its stomach.

During the reproductive period, females give birth to only one offspring at a time. Gestation lasts from 130 to 150 days and, after birth, the baby is clinging to the mother's back.

The lesser anteater occurs throughout Brazil, and can be found in forested areas, tropical forest and savannah environments. Although not at risk of extinction, it is threatened by habitat loss, roadkill, hunting and predation by exotic species.

When it feels threatened, it stands upright, leaning on its feathers and tail, leaving the claws of its paws free to strike.
