Also known as toucanuçu, the bird lives for an average of 40 years and is the largest among all known toucans..
Toco toucan (stump Ramphastos) is also known as toucanuçu. It is 56 centimeters long and weighs about 540 grams. It is the largest among all toucans and lives an average of 40 years.
Along with macaws and parrots, toco toucans are a kind of symbol of birds on the South American continent.
The plumage is black from the crown to the back and belly. Around the eyes, it has yellow bare skin. The eyelids are bluish. The crop is white and the plumage under the tail is reddish.
The orange beak has a black spot and can measure 22 centimeters. In chicks, the beak is short and yellow, without the black spot.
Omnivore, the animal feeds on fruits, insects, lizards, eggs and chicks of other birds. Due to deforestation, the toucan looks for food in areas close to cities.
The bird lives in pairs or flocks of two dozen individuals that fly in single file. It flies with its beak straight, in line with its neck, alternating short wing beats with a longer glide. When sleeping, it turns its head and rests its beak on its back.
