If he followed his mother's wishes, Heitor Villa-Lobos would have been a doctor. He preferred to leave his family and travel around the country, soaking up our sounds and rhythms. He performed at the 1922 Modern Art Week, amidst boos and applause, conducting in his slipper. He had hurt his foot, but they understood it as rebellion. The pianist Arthur Rubinstein, who wants to hear his compositions, fascinates. Villa responds: “I don't talk to pianists. They only play Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart”. He goes to Paris, where he makes it clear: “I didn't come to study with anyone. I came to show what I did”.
