In November 1986, a new disease was described in UK cattle herds. Animals became more withdrawn and isolated, refusing to pass through gates or enter narrow spaces. They became more sensitive to sounds and moved their ears quickly, grinding their teeth and licking themselves repetitively. Before long, even tame animals became aggressive and restless. Symptoms evolved, affecting motor coordination and then causing the animals to lie down. Most of them died between one and two months after the onset of symptoms. And although many animals were affected, the disease did not pass directly from one to another.
