It is a large lizard that can exceed up to 1.5 m in length, considering the long tail. In northern Brazil, they are popularly called chameleon, even though they do not belong to the Chamaeleonidae family (chameleons that occur in Asia, Africa and Europe). They are arboreal lizards, which feed and reproduce during the day. When they are in the reproductive period, they can lay up to 71 eggs in the same clutch during the dry season. When escaping from predators, they can run quickly on their hind legs and are excellent swimmers. They are mostly herbivores, but can feed on insects and bird eggs.
