Extremely agile and silent, the caatinga guigo (Callicebus barabarabrownae) is one of the most endangered Brazilian primates. Disappeared for nearly 70 years, it was once considered extinct and is now classified as critically endangered. It is estimated that there are only 250 individuals free.
In the past, it had a wide distribution in the forests east and south of the Rio S. Francisco. Today it survives only in small arboreal fragments in legal reserves of farms and “head forest”, preserved to protect the springs, in the interior of Bahia's caatinga.
It is a little monkey the size of a rabbit, weighing 1 to 2 kg. It has a leathery yellow trunk and limbs and an orange tail. They feed on fruits such as caja-bravo, mucugê and licuri, leaves, roots, honey, baby birds, small amphibians, rodents, snake lice and other insects.
Their groups are family units usually made up of four individuals: a couple, a calf born in the previous year, and a young calf. Very noisy, especially in the morning, it is often confused with the yellow-breasted capuchin monkey and the black howler monkey, thanks to the sounds they make.
The main threat to the caatinga guigo is deforestation associated with agriculture. As livestock requires more space, these properties probably have greater legal reserves, favoring the survival of the species.
